China’s 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit lets US passport holders enter Shanghai without a visa when they are en route to a third country. Flying USA → Shanghai → Mexico City is exactly that route, and our five-night stay fits comfortably inside the ten-day window.
What you need: a passport valid at least 3 more months, and a confirmed onward ticket to Mexico City (or anywhere that is not the USA). You request it at a dedicated counter on arrival at Pudong; no application beforehand, no fee.
Flying round-trip USA → Shanghai → USA? This does not apply to you — the rule requires a third country, not a round trip. You need the tourist visa below.
Official policy: China National Immigration Administration — en.nia.gov.cn. Airlines check the onward ticket at check-in, so have it booked before you fly.
For everyone doing Shanghai as a round trip from the US. The process got much easier in 2024: no flight bookings, no hotel reservations, no invitation letter needed for tourist visas.
The China Online Visa Application at cova.mfa.gov.cn. Budget 45–60 minutes; it is long. Save your Application ID. Two fields that trip people: parents’ dates of birth cannot be blank or “N/A” (use your best approximation), and your arrival date should be within about 90 days.
Passport-style, 48×33mm, white background, taken in the last 6 months, no glasses. Preliminary online review typically takes 3–5 business days; wait for the status to say your passport can be submitted.
Print the confirmation, sign it by hand — digital signatures are rejected.
Walk-ins are generally accepted (no appointment), weekday mornings. It must be in person or via someone you formally entrust — there is no mail-in directly to the consulate. Bring: passport (6+ months validity, blank pages), signed COVA confirmation, photo, and proof of residence in that consulate’s district (driver’s license works).
Standard processing is about 4 business days; express (+$25) is 2–3. You pay at pickup, by card. Check the visa dates and spelling before you leave the counter.
You must apply at the post covering the state you live in. Submitting to the wrong one gets rejected.

Verify hours on the consulate’s own site before going; most visa windows are weekday mornings only. If you live far from your consulate, you may entrust a friend in that city or a visa agency to submit for you.
Through the end of 2026 the reduced fees are $140 single-entry / $68 ten-year multiple-entry (yes, the ten-year is currently the cheaper one — take it). Express adds $25. If the reduction lapses in 2027, the standard fee is $185; budget for that possibility.

Both the reduced fee and the fingerprint waiver are currently published through end of 2026. Since we all apply in January 2027, either could lapse or be extended: worst case you pay $185 and give fingerprints at submission (which just means you cannot send someone in your place). We will update this page as soon as the 2027 rules are announced — nothing about the timing changes either way.
Rules vary enormously. Citizens of most of Europe, the UK, Japan, Korea, Australia and many others currently enter China visa-free for up to 30 days under a separate scheme — but its published expiry is also end of 2026, so check the China National Immigration Administration site or your nearest Chinese consulate before booking. When in doubt, ask us and we will dig with you.
